In recent editions of our newsletter, we’ve highlighted how farmers work to improve soil health, build a sustainable future and provide an abundance of food options for consumers. One of those options is purchasing organic food.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in partnership with South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA), created the Organic Transition Institute (OTI) to help farmers interested in transitioning to organic production. The initiative provides access to mentoring and technical guidance, one-on-one farmer assistance, market development support, and funding opportunities from a multi-agency USDA effort to help producers through the transition process.
As more South Dakota farmers adopt organic practices, consumers benefit from increased access to locally produced organic foods while supporting farmer methods that promote heathier soil, responsible animal care, and long-term environmental sustainability. The initiative also helps ease the financial challenges of the organic certification process, making it more feasible for farmers to invest in these practices.
