Volunteer for Farmers Serving Families!
Posted: 3/28/2016
March is almost over and for South Dakota Farm Families that means we are wrapping up an entire month of celebrating agriculture and the farmers in South Dakota. If you haven’t taken part in an ag month program yet, don’t worry! We still have one opportunity left and it may be the most important thing we do all month.
This week, on Thursday March 31st, we are hosting Farmers Serving Families at the Banquet in Sioux Falls. We will be preparing and serving a meal for those that need it most in the Sioux Falls area. Young or old, male or female, hunger has no limitations. Last year The Banquet served 180,000 meals to those in need. This is an opportunity for anyone involved in agriculture to give back to the community. Volunteers like you, prepare and serve each meal.
I have been a volunteer at The Banquet multiple times, and each time I serve a meal I learn something new. Volunteers are encouraged, but not required, to eat supper with the guests at The Banquet. Perhaps the most surprising thing is that I have never eaten a meal with someone who is not working. Often I assumed that people that needed a free meal were disabled or out of work, and some of them are. However many of the people that need a meal are working, but after paying for rent, electricity, and gas to get to work, there isn’t enough money to buy food.
If you would like to help those in need, there’s still time to volunteer to help. We need five more people to serve the meal this Thursday. To volunteer, call our office at (605) 336-3622, or sign up online. See you Thursday at the Banquet!
