PIERRE (September 19, 2011)-Beef producers from across the state will converge in Brookings Saturday, October 1, for the annual meeting of the South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) and the Beef Bowl football extravaganza at South Dakota State University (SDSU). It's an opportunity, says SDBIC Executive Director Ron Frederick, to not only conduct the organization's business, but to showcase the state's beef industry-and the delicious and nutrient-dense beef product-to football fans from across the area.
The annual meeting and Beef Bowl have been held on the same day for several years, but this year SDBIC will be kicking off some new activities to spread beef's message across to the thousands attending the game. For the first time, SDBIC will sponsor a Tailgate of the Year Award given to the top three football enthusiasts for the best use of beef at the tailgate party. In addition, SDBIC is sponsoring the "Beef Up Your Game" instant replay during the game between the SDSU Jacks and Indiana State Sycamores, with kickoff at 6 p.m. at Coughlin Stadium on the SDSU campus. The Beef Council will also be promoting beef at the SDSU Animal Science booth from 3-6 p.m. during the beef barbeque.
The football festivities will follow SDBIC's annual meeting, beginning at 8 a.m., and an 11:30 a.m. Prime Promoters Award Luncheon, both held at the Shamrock Conference Center in Brookings. SDBIC is the organization charged with collecting and administering the $1 Beef Checkoff on all cattle sold in South Dakota.
"The annual meeting is where we approve the budget for the fiscal year," says Frederick. "We will be looking at proposals for beef promotion and research, consumer education and international marketing of beef-determining which projects will provide the best value for the checkoff dollar." The 24 board members, representing eight ag-related state organizations, will also elect a president, vice president and treasurer, in addition to filling the U.S. Meat Export Federation director seat from South Dakota.
During the luncheon, the Cattleman's Club in Pierre, Coteau Hills Cattleman's Association, Jim and Carol Korkow of Korkow Rodeos in Pierre, and Jim Krantz of Howard, will be honored with Prime Promoter Awards. John 'Johnny Smith' will receive a posthumous Distinguished Service Award.
Cattle producers are encouraged to attend the annual meeting. Those wishing to attend the Prime Promoter Award Luncheon are asked to RSVP by September 23 by calling the SDBIC office at 605-224-4722.
#######
The SDBIC collects and administers the $1 Beef Checkoff on cattle sold in South Dakota. Checkoff dollars are utilized strictly for promotion, education or research programs. Fifty cents of every dollar is directed to the Cattlemen's Beef Board for programs on the national level. The SDBIC retains 50 cents, which is invested in additional national programs or in-state programs.
The SDBIC is comprised of three representatives from eight agricultural organizations: SD Beef Breeds Council, SD Cattlemen's Association, SD Cattlemen's Auxiliary, SD CattleWomen, SD Farm Bureau, SD Farmers Union, SD Livestock Auction Market Association and SD Stockgrowers Association.
