Training, practice and recovery all play important roles in preparing for a sports season. But athletes can sometimes overlook another essential part of performance: nutrition.

That’s where Build Your Base comes in.

Build Your Base is a comprehensive sports nutrition program that gives athletes and their families practical, evidence-based strategies for fueling performance and supporting recovery. The program highlights beef as a premier protein source and provides resources athletes, parents and coaches can use throughout the year.

Build Your Base began in South Dakota in 2017 through a partnership between the South Dakota Beef Industry Council, Sanford Health and the Sanford Sports Science Institute. Today, the program is also supported by Beef Logic Inc. It has since expanded through partnerships in South Dakota, Iowa, New York, Florida, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Practical Resources for Athletes and Families

Build Your Base is designed to give athletes and the people supporting them practical information and tools for building a strong foundation.

Through educational toolkits, videos, meal plans, performance tips and beef-based recipes, the program helps make sports nutrition more manageable for athletes and their families. Rather than prescribing complicated meals or unrealistic routines, it provides guidance that can fit into everyday life.

Why Protein Matters for Athletes

Protein plays an important role in supporting muscle repair and recovery after exercise. Build Your Base features beef as one way athletes can incorporate high-quality protein into a balanced diet. Beef also provides nutrients such as iron, zinc and vitamin B12.

Build Your Base helps athletes understand how beef and other nutritious foods can work together as part of a balanced approach to fueling their bodies.

Building Habits Beyond the Season

While the program is designed for athletes, there are practical benefits for non-athletes who are interested in participating. Sports seasons come and go, but the habits young athletes establish can benefit them for years. Learning how to fuel properly, making balanced food choices and prioritizing recovery can support performance while helping athletes build healthy habits beyond the playing field.
