Exclusive look at local farms; Farms After Five Tours Open for registration!

Posted: 7/6/2015

July is a celebration of our great country, a time for fun in the sun, and for going on summer farm tours! If you have wanted to visit a farm but haven’t yet found the right opportunity, there are still two farm tours this summer.

Join us for a Farms After Five tour on July 9 and 23. Do you have questions about the food you eat? Now is the time to get those questions answered. Throughout the evening you'll have the opportunity to ask questions about GMOs, hormones, and antibiotic use in animals. At each tour you will have the chance to talk with farmers and ag professionals about how your food is grown.

IMG_8027.JPGFarmers in the Salem and Garretson area are opening their doors, and are ready to share what they do on the farm in each day.  At each tour you will also have the chance to get up-close and personal with farm animals. In addition we’ll share a meal while listening to a guest speaker talk about the new technologies used in agriculture and how that effects food production.

This week we are visiting the Roling Family Farm near Salem. Barney and his family are 4th and 5th generation family famers.  They are gracious enough to open their farm and teach us how they raise cattle, pigs, and crops. Barney’s vet and animal nutritionist will be on hand to answer the more technical questions of raising animals for food production.

This summer the barn doors are open. All Farms After Five Tours are free, but pre registration is required! For more information and to sign up, www.agunited.org/2015FarmTours. We hope to see you there!
