Core Standard & Question: 4.OA.3 Solve multi-step word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

  • A sow has a litter with 10 piglets, each weighing about 3.5 pounds. Three weeks later the 10 piglets have a combined weight of 160 pounds.  About how many pounds did each piglet gain? About how many pounds does each piglet now weigh?

*3.5x10=35;  160-35=125;  125/10=12.5 gained;  12.5+3.5=16 pounds each

Discussion: Jim told us some ways that pigs are similar to people.  We both need iron and other nutrients and we get vaccinations.  What are some other things that people have in common with pigs and other animals?
