Core Standard & Question: 4.OA.3 Solve multi-step word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

  • In the video, Jim tells us that approximately 28,500 seeds of corn are planted per acre.  If the field is 150 acres, how many seeds were planted?  If each bag of seed purchased holds about 80,000 seeds, how many bags of corn will need to be purchased to plant the field?
  • 28,000x150=4,200,000
  • 4,200,000/80,000=52.5 (53)

Discussion: In the beginning of the video, Jim said that they needed rain.  Besides helping the grass grow, why else may farmers need rain? What else on the farm can be impacted by the weather?
