4.L.1.2. Students are able to differentiate between vertebrates and invertebrates, and classify the five groups of vertebrates (mammal, reptile, amphibian, bird, and fish) based on characteristics.

  • Jim showed us a video of a new baby calf being born.  Based on what you know about cows and what you saw in the video, is the baby calf an invertebrate or vertebrate? What group is it in? How do you know?

Discussion: Generally a cow will have a healthy calf on her own.  If she is young, she may need some help from the farmer as shown in the video.

Teacher’s resource:  A great book to go with this video would be “Levi’s Lost Calf”.  It can be purchased here: http://www.amazon.com/Levis-Lost-Calf-Amanda-Radke/dp/1463514425 Here is a lesson to go with the book.  http://www.agclassroom.org/sd/volunteers/doc/levis_lesson.pdf
